Research defuses belief that immigration threatens national identity

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE -- Much of the fervor fueling the anti-immigration debate is shaped by the belief that immigrantslegal and otherwiseare somehow a threat to our national identity. Americans, some critics believe, venerate a set of ideals and attitudes that are distinctly American. But do immigrants honor these same values?

They do, says Deborah Schildkraut, associate professor of political science at Tufts University, who investigates such questions in her continuing research on immigration in America. In her most recent work, Schildkraut surveyed Americans' attitudes towards immigrants, and the opinion of immigrants and ethnic minorities themselves.

Schildkraut found that immigrants and their descendants embrace basic American valuesthe love of freedom, the desire for economic advancement, the promise of the American Dream even as they celebrate and honor their own heritages.

The findings are based on a 144-question telephone survey of 2,800 people nationwide representing all demographics. Schildkraut finished her analysis of the data, which was collected in 2004, a year and a half ago, and it formed the foundation for her book "Americanism in the Twenty-First Century: Public Opinion in the Age of Immigration" (Cambridge University Press, 2011).

The majority of those surveyed were white while thirty percent were black, Asian and Latino. Among the survey questions were queries designed to measure how strongly different groups felt about being an American and the importance of being an American.

Respondents generally agreed that being identified as an American was a personal priority regardless of their background. They also felt a strong sense of civic obligation, patriotism, and trust.

Schildkraut also found that a majority of white Americans are not anti-immigrant. "It just feels that way because immigration's critics are the most organized, and they have people in positions of power who agree with them to help further their agendas."

Schildkraut says hers is one of the only studies to intentionally include ethnic minorities from many backgrounds, and contains the broadest set of data collected on what people think it means to be an American.

Her current research project explores public opinion about political representation in the United States. Do people want their representatives to resemble them, or do they want their representatives to be "better" than they are? What makes them feel that they are being represented well in government? In what ways to issues of race and ethnicity affect how people feel about political representation?

Is that a legal job interview question? It's murky

Forbes Images

While asking general questions about age or religion aren't clear-cut under discrimination laws, queries about a person's disability are not allowed.

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Are you pregnant? What religion are you? How old are you?

There are certain questions most of us don?t expect hiring managers to ask during a job interview because we think they?re too personal or even illegal.

But while such inquiries aren?t always legal no-nos, they can be hazardous.

Cynthia M. applied for a job at Florida insurer, and believed she was more than qualified for the position. But during the interview she was asked about her religion and probed about her marital status.

?I was asked point-blank if I attended church and ?which one?? ? said Cynthia, who didn?t want her full name used because she feared it would hurt her continued job search. She was also asked if she had a family.?When she told the recruiter she had a daughter, the interviewer asked, ?Is that all??

?That particular?interview was very brief and there was zero response to my carefully thought-out letter I sent after the interview as a follow-up,? she explained. ?I guess he didn't like that I was a single parent.?

A reader on our Facebook page, Linda Och, wrote recently that during a phone interview for a job she was asked her birth date and age. ?I never heard from the employer again. I feel it was the cause of my not hearing about a second interview,? she maintained.

?Is this not discrimination?? she asked.

While you can?t refuse to hire someone based on a characteristic that?s protected under the nation?s labor laws, including things like religion or age, questioning a job applicant about such things by itself isn?t going to get government discrimination defenders banging down any company doors.

What happens as far as hiring decisions after the questions are asked is what ends up getting employers in legal hot water.

?Pre-employment inquires about a person's race, sex or?pregnancy, national origin,?religion?or age are not technically illegal under the laws we enforce as long as they are asked of all people,? said Justine Lisser, a spokeswoman and senior attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Dads, are you feeling pressure to do it all?

?Employment decisions made on those bases -- such as denying employment to all pregnant women, or everyone who isn't a Christian, are illegal, however,? she continued.??When investigating a charge of discrimination, the EEOC will look at these types of pre-employment inquiries as indications of discriminatory intent.?

Nigel Telman, an attorney with Proskauer, an employment law firm that represents employers, said questions related to protected categories such as age or religion may seem innocuous to some hiring managers but can end up causing problems down the line. ?An applicant who didn?t get the job can allege they told the employer something about a protected characteristic,? he noted.

Indeed, if there turns out to be a pattern pointing to discrimination against a certain group or groups, such questions may become substantiation of illegal practices.

In the case of Texas Roadhouse, questions by hiring managers about age are part of anecdotal evidence in the age-discrimination case against the restaurant chain brought by the EEOC last year.

The EEOC case alleges that managers were instructed to hire younger job applicants, and that?older unsuccessful applicants nationally were told: ?There are younger people here who can grow with the company? and ?You seem older to be applying for this job.?

Texas Roadhouse officials did not immediately return a telephone call requesting a comment.

While asking general questions about age or religion aren?t clear-cut under discrimination laws, queries about a person?s disability are not allowed.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, employers are prohibited pre-employment inquiries about an applicant?s disability, according to the EEOC. ?

The agency states on its ?pre-employment inquires? web page that:

  • Employers generally cannot ask disability-related questions or require medical examinations until after an applicant has been given a conditional job offer.?
  • Employers are permitted to ask limited questions about reasonable accommodation if they reasonably believe that the applicant may need accommodation because of an obvious or voluntarily disclosed disability, or where the applicant has disclosed a need for accommodation.

In addition, it?s illegal to ask questions about genetic information or family medical history under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, the EEOC?s Lisser pointed out.

And, she added, ?It is also illegal for an employer to advertise?for specific characteristics such as sex, age or race.??

Given that personal questions could lead to claims of bias, you?d think employers would have abandoned the practice already.

?Some managers need a reminder that these questions are hazardous to the company,? said Richard Howard, an employment attorney with Meltzer Lippe.??Hiring managers should absolutely steer clear of questions regarding age, race, religion, pregnancy, and marital status.?

Has a hiring manager ever asked you an inappropriate question related to age, race, religion, pregnancy, health, or marital status? Share your story below.?

Consumer confidence in the economy plunged in May

NEW YORK (AP) ? Here we go again.

Americans confidence in the economy suffered the biggest drop in eight months as worries about the weak jobs, housing and stock markets rattled them again. The decline comes after a few months of optimism amid some positive economic news.

The Conference Board, a private research group, said on Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 64.9, down from a revised 68.7 in April. With gas prices falling, Americans were expected to push the measure to 70, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

But the May figure, which represents the biggest drop since October 2011 when the measure fell about 6 points, shows that consumers need more encouraging economic signs before their concerns start to dissipate. Americans remain worried about slow hiring, declining home values, big drops in the stock market and a worsening European economy that they fear will negatively impact the U.S.

"Consumers were less positive about current business and labor market conditions, and they were more pessimistic about the short-term outlook," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. May's figure is significantly below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy. The measure hasn't been near that level since December 2007. But the latest reading is still well above the 40 figure reached last October and the all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

The consumer confidence measure has zigzagged so far this year, dropping in January, rising in February and holding nearly steady after that. Analysts were hoping a slight rise in May would give some credence to the idea that the economy is stabilizing.

Instead, the data, which was based on a survey conducted from May 1 through May 16 with about 500 randomly selected people nationwide, suggests that "the pace of economic growth in the months ahead may moderate," said Franco, with The Conference Board.

Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo, said May's reading is disappointing, but consistent with the sluggish economic recovery so far.

"In some ways, it's a microcosm of the whole economic recovery," he said. "Every once in a while hopes are raised that things are getting better and then the bottom seems to fall out again."

Analyst say the dismal job market is what keeps Americans from being confident. Indeed, U.S. job growth remains inconsistent.

Hiring picked up earlier in the year, but slowed in March and April, suggesting the economy's early-year momentum faded in early spring. Economists say a warm winter led employers to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn't occur until spring.

A clearer picture of the jobs market will emerge on Friday, when May employment figures are due out. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 8.1 percent for May with an increase of 160,000 jobs, according to FactSet. That's above April's gains but below the growth pace set this winter.

Adding to Americans' job woes, the stock market in May is on track for its worst month since last September. The S&P 500 is down 4.6 percent for the month. But on Tuesday, The stock market appeared to shrug off the report. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 110 points when the report was released at 10 a.m., and climbed 20 points higher after it came out.

That indicates investors may be more confident in the economic recovery than consumers, said John Lonski, chief economist of Moody's.

"Financial markets are giving short shrift to the drop in consumer confidence," Lonski said.

Meanwhile, recent signs that an economic slowdown is spreading beyond Europe to fast-growing countries like China has raised fears that U.S. companies could pull back on hiring as demand weakens for their products. The housing market also is still weak, and many consumers are seeing their retirement plans shrink as stock prices fall.

Conversely, shoppers are getting some relief at the gas pump. Gasoline has dropped 27 cents per gallon since early April. The national average was $3.67 per gallon as of the start of the Memorial Day weekend on Friday; some experts say it could fall as low as $3.50 by July 4.

A Guide to Purchasing and Using Travel Insurance | ApostolicCM ...

bIs Travel Insurance Genuinely Essential?/b

Travel is already expensive sufficient, isn?t it? The cost of air fare, cruises, hotels, ground transportation, food and actions and entertainment are currently large sufficient. I never know about you, but I operate challenging for my money, and when I travel, I want to maintain as considerably of my income in MY pocket as possible. Is travel insurance a necessity or a luxury? Why not reduce a few corners here and there. Why get something if it?s not really essential?

My private solution is, needless to say, that I?m not independently rich and can?t withstand the prospective monetary losses if I call for medical care whilst I?m traveling. Not becoming independently rich also implies that I am inside the market for sufficient but cheap travel insurance coverage. I suspect that you simply are inside the same place, which means you, also need low-cost travel insurance coverage. If you?re nevertheless not certain about that, take into account the following.

Did you know that if you get sick or are injured even though traveling abroad, your medical program may not cover each of the expenses you may incur? In the event the fees of remedy are increased than the maximums of one?s health-related plan, you will be responsible for the distinction, unless of course you might have already purchased travel insurance. In reality, you could not even be admitted into hospitals in some countries without proof that you just have health or medical insurance.

This really is genuine for everyone, regardless of age or length of time abroad. Suppose you fall ill just a few hours right after arriving at your location. Or suppose you produce a day-trip to an additional nation, and also you are injured within a traffic accident. Or suppose one of your kids is part of a group creating a class pay a visit to abroad, gets food poisoning and calls for hospitalization. In all situations, with out satisfactory travel wellbeing insurance, you will be accountable for the costs over and past the limitations of your existing health-related plan.

Consequently, before going abroad, you will need to generate certain that you just are adequately covered by travel medical insurance coverage that won?t break your price range. You need to check to view if suitable coverage is currently obtainable to you by way of your medical strategy, employee advantages, or maybe through a charge card. When the coverage is adequate for your requirements, you then can get pleasure from your trip without having incurring the extra expense of travel insurance. However, if you are not confident of your coverage, or if your coverage is inadequate or non-existent, then your subsequent step must be to investigation and buy the travel insurance coverage you need.

bHow Considerably Are you able to Expect To Shell out?/b

When I purchased my first plane ticket to China a few many years ago it cost around $2000 round-trip, and my travel insurance price me over $500 because I did not store about for low-cost travel insurance coverage on-line.

A number of many years later on, a little bit older and wiser, and my travel insurance for another trip to China cost me much less?about $300 for roughly exactly the same coverage. The distinction? Just before purchasing my travel insurance coverage for the 2nd trip, I shopped close to on the web and got the coverage I needed, at the proper value. If I?d have bought my travel insurance for this most current trip from my travel agent, it would?ve price me about $600 for the trip, and my plane tickets only expense $1,500! Not precisely the wise strategy to go.

So how much will it expense you? Not as significantly cash as it will price you in the event you get sick or injured abroad and you don?t have any travel insurance coverage! That is the apparent answer to the question.

Actually, how much travel insurance coverage expenses will rely in your age as well as the kind of coverage you decide on. Simple policies price as tiny as $5.50 USD per $1000 of coverage. Around the other hand, you are able to anticipate a full coverage policy to expense you from 7 to 10% from the expense of your trip, based on your age. The older you?re, the more you will shell out. Regardless of what the cost of the policy, nevertheless, it really is positive to be a lot significantly less than the cost of health-related evacuation!

The good news is that you?ll be able to very easily, conveniently and quickly research and locate outstanding but low cost online travel insurance coverage and lessen the expenses while producing an informed obtain. This can be significantly far better than taking what you will be supplied in the travel agency since you can choose from numerous travel insurance organizations and polices and preserve by yourself a whole lot of money within the process. A single spot you?ll be able to start your search is at bTravel Insurance coverage Central/b, http://www.travel-insurance-central.com

bWhat You ought to Take into account When Buying Travel Insurance/b

To help you as part of your analysis, here are some tips to help you make an informed purchase.

b1. Take into account the worst-case scenario. /b Should you can financially withstand the worst-case scenario then perhaps you don?t want travel insurance coverage or perhaps you do not need to have a complete policy.

b2. Be sure the policy you?re considering provides adequate medical/dental coverage, such as health-related evacuation coverage/b just in case you need medical care within a spot where the best remedy available is below the requirements you?re accustomed to as part of your country. This can happen if you fall ill inside an establishing nation or perhaps on a cruise ship.

b3. Verify your current insurance coverage policies for possible coverage./b There is no sense in having to pay much more for what you previously have within your homeowner or tenant policy, this sort of as theft and loss coverage.

b4. Should you be a frequent traveler, you must take into account annual or year-round travel insurance policies./b Sometimes they may be called multi-trip travel insurance coverage policies. What ever the name, these policies may be comparatively cheap when in comparison with single-trip travel insurance policies.

b5. Know what you might be acquiring, so study the fine print./b Be sure that you recognize what the business considers to become a reputable reason for cancellation or interruption. If the list is as well restrictive, perhaps you must consider an additional policy.

b6. Do not restrict oneself to buying only out of your travel agent./b He/She will most likely only have one particular company?s product(s) accessible, and it is there to your comfort, but that convenience can be quite costly!

b7. Ask lots of queries about the coverage./b Play the ?what if? game. Ask for clear explanations of terminology. Make certain that you just along with the travel insurance company are speaking the same language.

b8. Never purchase the insurance by means of your transportation provider./b When the airline goes bankrupt, how adequate will your insurance coverage be?

bOnce You?ve Bought Your Travel Insurance/b

Remember that your travel insurance policy covers you in between certain specific dates, so don?t start off your trip early or extend your trip with no 1st modifying the dates of coverage in your travel insurance policy. Naturally, this may expense you extra, but that?s cheaper than finding yourself with out coverage whenever you want it probably the most.

Also, it virtually goes with no saying that you simply need to bring your travel insurance policy with you when you go abroad. You cannot seek the advice of the policy if it really is sitting on your desk in your own home. You ought to also carry your travel insurance coverage company?s toll-free help cellphone range and other speak to data with you wherever you go. It does you no great in the event you get ill or hurt and also the necessary policy information is sitting in your hotel area. It?s also a great idea to bring your normal medical coverage cards and information with you.

I hope these suggestions can help you from the finest travel insurance coverage for you personally. Then take your trip using the peace of thoughts that originates from understanding that you simply are insured through the correct travel insurance policy at the appropriate cost. bBon voyage!/b

(AP) ? Colombian superstar Juanes said singer-songwriter-producer Juan Luis Guerra got him out of his comfort zone when the musician started rearranging his songs for his "MTV Unplugged" taping.

And Juanes was happy to take on the challenge.

"He put me in another place, but for me as a musician, as an artist, I was like: 'Wow. This is a new world. I feel like I can do this,'" Juanes said in a recent interview. "We tried different styles ... (and) I was not used to that kind of arrangement."

Guerra, the Dominican Grammy-winning producer, is known for his bachata and merengue sound. He's won the Latin Grammy for album of the year three times. Juanes, also a Grammy winner, has a sound that is built from rock and metal genres.

The singer said the 14 songs on "Juanes: MTV Unplugged," released this week, are a blend of Latin, jazz, blues, rock, folk and classic sounds. He says the process felt new.

"You know, it's scary, but it's kind of what I'm looking for now," he said. "Just to take the risk and go to different places and try different things. So it's not about fear, it's more about risk."

The first single, "Le Senal (The Sign)," has peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's U.S. Latin Songs chart. The special, which aired Monday, was taped at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach, Fla., in February.

Juanes says a new sound will be all over his upcoming studio album, due out next year.

"The 'Unplugged' right now is like a transition album. It's going to give (me) some more time to keep writing my songs and go the studio," he said. "It's going to be completely different, wild and loud, and happy."

The 39-year old is married to model-actress Karen Martinez. He says he's noticed his musical abilities spillover onto his daughters, ages 7 and 8, who are now taking piano lessons. He also has a 2-year-old son, who he says is "crazy with cars and superheroes."

"Unplugged" is the singer's first release since splitting with his longtime manager, Fernan Martinez.

"It's all about cycles, things stop and sometimes things end," he said of the split. "And now I just feel like writing new pages of my life, new chapters. So I feel really positive, and at the same time, really thankful of the past."

'iMap' turns up online, headed for iOS6? - News - Know Your Cell

It?s no big secret that Apple has been working on a mapping and navigation solution for some time. Now it appears that the concerted effort to move as far away from Google-owned patents as possible is finally coming to fruition, after a series of images reportedly showing the software in action have surfaced online.

The images, which were uncovered by one of BGR?s ?trusted sources,? don?t show a whole lot, but they do appear to confirm the inclusion of 3D mapping. This comes courtesy of Apple?s acquisition of C3 Technologies, a specialist in the field.

The screenshots also appear to show a refreshed, silver visual style, which may be a hint at what is to come from the next version of Apple?s hugely popular mobile OS.

The software is apparently being put through its paces in an alpha-build of iOS 6, so users may get their hands on the app as soon as next month, when the next iteration of the operating system is expected to be revealed. But while WWDC is being discussed as a potential launchpad for the new software it?s far from official-?so don?t be disappointed and grouchy with us if it doesn?t materialize!

Daily Business News - MH Marketing Sales Management

Following a story we wrote May, 8 2012 concerning a plan to replace 125 factory-built homes at the Wagon Wheel Village MHC in Box Elder, South Dakota with 166 modular units, we learn owner Bob Akers is returning to the Planning and Zoning Commission with revised plans, according to the RapidCityJournal. MHProNews.com has learned his original plan was to space the homes ten feet apart. The commission?s current statute does not address population density, but does require MH to be 20 feet apart. At the May 7 meeting commissioners had also expressed concerns regarding fire and police access, storm water drainage, parking, and useable outdoor space.

Creative announces Sound BlasterAxx wireless speakers with mics

In a departure from its traditional sound cards, Creative has just unveiled a line of Bluetooth speakers with built-in mics, called the Sound BlasterAxx range. Yes, these are the pun-heavy ones we anticipated last week, but now we have a lot more detail. There are three different sizes of speaker, but only the larger two (the SBX-20 and SBX-10) are Bluetooth -- the smaller and cheaper SBX-8 must be tethered. All contain the new SBAxx-1 hardware processor, and even the SBX-20 can be powered over USB from a mobile device (with sufficient current output) or a power pack. The speakers are designed to bring Creative into the Internet Age with a number of voice-enhancing features for video chat apps like Skype. These include highly-focused directionality and noise reduction, to frame out peripheral sounds, and also Smart Volume, which automatically adjusts audio levels as you move closer to or further from the mic. There's also some quirky stuff like comic voice effects, just in case you're not embarrassed by how you sound on a mic already. The SBX-8 and SBX-10 will be available in the UK from early July for £80 and £130 respectively, while the flagship SBX-20 will arrive in August for £180.

Update: Now with added gallery and video after the break!
