Let's Talk Oscars

I, too, loved that Sound of Music gag, which combined the thing Seth MacFarlane does best?granularly specific pop-culture references?and the kind of gentle barb that I appreciate in the midst of the Oscars? hilarious display of self-regard. (Plummer, of course, seems to hate The Sound of Music, and I am delighted that he was reminded of his best-ever movie, now 48 years old, just before his self-aggrandizing bit about how all five Supporting Actress nominees will be working with him soon if they?re lucky.) Troy, I won?t go as far as you do in calling this the best Oscar ceremony you can remember, but I will say that anyone who thinks Seth MacFarlane was an embarrassment as Oscar host has a really short memory for Oscar hosts. He can sell a joke, he can ad-lib, and he?s got the golden pipes of an old-timey radio announcer. Approximately half his jokes were lousy, and a handful were actively embarrassing. I would describe him as worse than Alec and Steve, Chris Rock, and Letterman, and basically as good as everyone else for the last 20 years. Except he was better than Franco and Hathaway.

As for La Hathaway?s win this year, Dana, I had high hopes for the awfulsomeness of her speech, and that initial breathy whisper?so stagey, yet so obviously true!?made me briefly excited to think it might wind up an epochal event. But then it devolved into an earnest litany of agents and co-stars, a speech delivered by someone whose fear of appearing ridiculous overcame her innate ridiculousness. It?s a real shame. Leave Hathaway alone, Internet! How will she blossom into the sublime flower of wondrous faux-ingenuousness she is otherwise destined to be if you keep nipping her in the bud? (Speaking of which, Troy, I have nothing to say about her two important points, but I will note that someone at my neighbors? Oscar party called her dress ?sort of a Julie Andrews number,? which strikes me as both precisely what Hathaway was going for and extremely mistaken about the charms of Julie Andrews.)

At that Oscar party, occupied entirely by non-media folks, we all ?tweeted? jokes and observations about the proceedings out loud with our mouths. Happy to relay that I got a lot of RTs, mostly delivered by the kind young man who sat next to my hard-of-hearing mother all night. The overwhelming response at the party was that the ceremony was OK: It had its ups and downs, with the ?We Saw Your Boobs? opening number (and its entire attendant Shatnerian metaness) a definite up and most of the jokes between 9:30 and 11:30 the downs. (A real low point was MacFarlane?s introduction of Dustin Hoffman and Charlize Theron, in which he just noted that they are different from each other.)

About that number: Was it in poor taste? Yes. Was it meant to be? Yes. Was it funny nonetheless? Yes, thanks in great part to the game actresses who delivered prerecorded death stares (or, in Jennifer Lawrence?s case, an awesome fist pump). It was telling, of course, that many of the actresses mentioned in the song did not prerecord their death stares but were presumably delivering them, unseen by the camera, anyway. But it struck me that Lawrence?s response?like her laughing fit later that night when eye-groped by Jack Nicholson?was instructive. She?s from the newest generation of stars?a generation in which actresses are accreting ever-more power, and in which the appropriate response to gross old Jack is to laugh at him. Is Hollywood post-sexist? Of course not, Hollywood is still sexist as hell, and that was reflected in the Oscars, as it has been in every Oscar ceremony ever. But Jennifer Lawrence doesn?t give a damn. She?s baller.

In other news, I was as usual completely wrong about Best Picture?and everything else, as evidenced in my dismal performance in the Slate Oscar pool. But I was not wrong in thinking that crabby snacks would make an amazing Oscar-night appetizer. (Homemades, less so. Too messy.) I didn?t see you predicting that, Nate Silver.

Fendi in Milan sticks discreetly to fur heritage

MILAN (AP) ? Fendi is to fur what Ferrari is to cars. Yet given current concerns about animal rights, the brand has moved from the lavish fur coats that were all the rage in the 1980s to a more discreet way of interpreting fur as fashion.

At Just Cavalli, which showed right after Fendi on Thursday and also featured furs, an activist disrupted the show by jumping on the runway holding a sign that read "Your fashion is our death." She was forcibly dragged away as were several others in the audience who had held up similar signs.

At the latest Fendi winter collection presented Thursday during Milan Fashion Week, Silvia Venturini, the creative director and daughter of one of the company's five founding sisters, opted for wisps of fur used as hair decorations, bracelets, or charms hanging from Fendi bags.

Fur also appeared as inserts in a skirt or a dress, or sheered and fashioned into a cozy, but not showy, jacket. Long fur, usually goat, also seen on other runways during Milan's preview showings, was used to make up a skirt or a cape.

For decades, German born designer Karl Lagerfeld has been working with Fendi, adding his flamboyant designing talent to their creative genius.

This round he offered a constructed slim silhouette, with accentuated shoulders and a knee-length hemline. The look is sophisticated rather than sexy and used deep, dark shades of red and blue, which along with black are becoming the staple colors for next winter.

In the accessory department, Fendi chose to reinvent its iconic handbags, from the clutch bag ? this time furry ? to a modern version of the Mary Poppins bag.

The shoes are sure to be a winter hit. Whether a pump, a boot or a lace-up, each pair was elaborately decorated, some in fur, and comes with a pointed toe and a glistening mirrored high heel.

Gingrich's jab at Rove shows conflicts within Republicans' makeover

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If there is anything more tense than the relations between Republicans and Democrats in Washington, it might be what is happening between two prominent Republicans: strategist Karl Rove and former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Three months after Republicans failed to oust Democratic President Barack Obama from the White House, Rove, Gingrich and other Republicans are locked in an increasingly bitter debate over how to revamp their party to appeal more to women and minorities.

The latest in a series of spats surfaced on Wednesday, as Gingrich gave a blistering critique of Rove's plan to create a fundraising group aimed at boosting moderate Republicans in congressional races - and blocking the rise of far-right conservative candidates.

"Handing millions (of dollars) to Washington-based consultants to destroy the candidates they dislike and nominate the candidates they do like is an invitation to cronyism, favoritism and corruption," Gingrich wrote in the conservative magazine Human Events. He also chided Rove - a former top aide to President George W. Bush - for his work in several losing races last fall.

Gingrich's shot at Rove reflected the tension that has been building among Republicans since the November 6 elections, when Obama won with big margins of support from women and minority groups, including the fast-growing Hispanic population. It was the fifth time in the last six presidential elections that the Democratic candidate got the most votes.

Since then, Republican strategists say, their party has been wrestling with two questions: Has our message gotten too conservative for an increasingly diverse and moderate national electorate? Or, is it just the way we've been selling it?

The effort to answer those questions helps explain much of the party's political maneuvering since the election.

It's why conservative leaders who believe there is nothing wrong with the party's low-tax, limited-government message are looking beyond Washington's gridlock to emphasize places where tax-cutting Republicans are showing more promise: at the state level, namely the 24 states where Republicans control the governor's office and the legislature.

And it's why, even amid the partisanship in Washington, there have been gestures toward the political center that would have been difficult to imagine just a few months ago.

Four Republicans in the Senate, including Marco Rubio of Florida, joined four Democrats in proposing an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws. Some conservative Republicans, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, have indicated they would back a path to citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, an issue that for years has been a non-starter among conservatives.

Republican leaders in Congress have sought to tamp down internal rebellions over fiscal issues and harsh rhetoric on immigration and abortion that led some voters in November to see Republicans as obstructionists in Congress, anti-immigrant and anti-women. House Speaker John Boehner removed four fiscally conservative lawmakers from powerful committees in December.

And this month, Rove's American Crossroads "Super PAC" announced that it was forming the Conservative Victory Project to recruit more moderates to run for high office.

Rove acknowledged that the idea behind the new group was to avoid having candidates such as Representative Todd Akin of Missouri and Richard Mourdock of Indiana, Senate hopefuls last year who were backed by the conservative Tea Party movement.

During their campaigns, Akin and Mourdock, both of whom oppose abortion rights, made comments about rape that helped to sink their chances for election. Akin resisted calls to withdraw from his race after saying that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant.

The comments by Akin and Mourdock were among several by conservative Republicans that often were cited by Democrats who accused Republicans of waging a "war on women."

"It's amazing that people think Todd Akin was the best we could've come up with," Rove said on Fox News. "We need to get better conservative candidates and win."

TARGETING ROVE

It is not unusual for a party to try to "re-brand" itself and its message after losing a presidential race.

But many staunch conservatives and Tea Party-backed Republicans are dismayed by efforts to reach out to Democrats or compromise on any front.

During the past two weeks, Rove and his new group have been a popular target for such Republicans.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad called Rove's move a "mistake." Former Representative Joe Walsh of Illinois, a Tea Party favorite who lost his bid for re-election in November, said he plans to launch a conservative fund-raising group to battle Rove's group and "fight for the soul of the Republican Party."

And Akin, defending his campaign from Rove's criticisms, accused the strategist of trying to "get rid of conservatives."

Meanwhile, a Tea Party group that had sent out a fund-raising e-mail with an altered photo showing Rove in a Nazi military uniform apologized to him on Tuesday, saying that a vendor had doctored the photo without the group's approval.

Rove said he does not want to fight with the Tea Party and other conservative groups, and that he is simply trying to put Republicans in position to win elections.

That sentiment was echoed by Republican strategist Ron Bonjean.

"With a void of power after the election, the struggle between pragmatists versus purists on electing Republican candidates seems inevitable," Bonjean said. "However, it's not about being conservative or moderate. The best conservative with the best chance of winning the election should have the backing from everyone."

WATCH THE GOVERNORS

In recent weeks, Republicans have made a point of touting their efforts on the state level as models for how the party can improve its appeal to voters on a national level.

Republicans now hold the governor's office in 30 of the 50 states. In 24 of those states, the legislature also is controlled by Republicans.

Party strategists say that anyone looking for clues about what they will emphasize in coming elections should examine states such as Michigan and Louisiana. If they are a guide, Republicans' long-term strategy does not include backing away from conservative platforms.

In Michigan, Governor Rick Snyder champions "right to work" laws that limit unions' rights, measures that Republicans say boost economic development.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is seeking to eliminate the state's personal and business income taxes, and replace them with more sales taxes.

Jindal says the plan would expand the state's tax base, create more revenue and boost the economy.

In Indiana, former congressman and new governor Mike Pence has made cutting the state's income tax by 10 percent a legislative priority. And in Kansas, Governor Sam Brownback is pushing to eliminate the state's income tax. Both support raising sales taxes.

Democrats and other critics say the emphasis on sales taxes would shift more of the tax burden to lower-income people while reducing taxes on the wealthy.

But Republicans counter that tax-cutting measures will have broad appeal - and ultimately help Republicans win more support among women and minorities - because they will stimulate the economy and create jobs.

"It's the governors who are coming up with good, creative ideas," said New Hampshire Republican strategist Dave Carney, who advised Texas Governor Rick Perry's presidential campaign.

Joe Allbaugh, who managed George W. Bush's presidential campaign in 2000, agreed.

"I don't see anybody in Washington who is going to catch fire" in the next presidential race, Allbaugh said. "It's very likely that the positions taken by a handful of Republican governors will determine the shape of the party's ... positions for 2016."

    Florida - Legal Blog Watch

    FloridaMan
By now, many of you who are on Twitter have come across the Twitter feed for Florida Man, which provides "real-life headlines about the world's worst superhero." Basically, anything of an insane or inane nature that can be done in this country is being done by Florida Man. ?

For example, who was?"Charged With Neglect After Trying To Transport Infant And 4-Foot-Tall Marijuana Plant In The Same Car?" Florida Man

Who was "Charged With Battery After Argument Over Ball Scratching?" Florida Man

Who was the reason for a "Woman Injured After Bullet Left Inside Oven?" Florida Man

And do I even need to ask, who "Blamed 7-Eleven Robbery On Lack Of Sex?" You know it was Florida Man.

The Florida Man Twitter feed cleverly captures all of Florida Man's misdeeds in one convenient place (check them all out here). I am now wondering ... what/who is the legal profession's equivalent of Florida Man? The best I can come up with so far is Disgruntled Lawyer, who, while not as prolific as Florida Man, has been wreaking some havoc of his own:

Can anyone come up with a better legal profession equivalent to Florida Man? Let me know.

Wisconsin governor wants to cut income taxes, public school aid

(Reuters) - Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker proposed a nearly $70 billion biennial budget on Wednesday that combines income tax cuts with increased spending on transportation infrastructure and private education.

Walker, a first-term Republican facing re-election next year, said he would offset the tax cuts and spending increases contained in his 2013-2015 budget by redirecting some funds away from public schools and healthcare, freezing aid to local governments and selling off state assets such as power plants.

Democrats said the proposal would weaken the economic security of the state's most vulnerable residents.

Walker, who touched off massive protests two years ago when he curbed the collective bargaining rights of public workers, said his proposed income tax cut would save residents $343 million.

"More money in the hands of taxpayers will likely drive greater demand for goods and services, which will likely lead to greater production and eventually more hiring of employees," he said.

The proposed budget, unveiled in an address to both houses of the Legislature in Madison, included expanded state aid to private schools through voucher programs and the tightening of income eligibility requirements for recipients of publicly funded health programs.

Walker said he also wanted "able-bodied, non-elderly" people receiving food stamps in Wisconsin to be enrolled in mandatory employment training.

"I'm all for providing a temporary hand up," he told lawmakers. "But ... it should not be a permanent handout.

Democrats, who tried unsuccessfully last year to recall Walker, were critical of the proposed budget.

State Senator Kathleen Vinehout, who was a candidate for governor in the Democratic primary ahead of last year's recall election, said, "Roads and bridges are being paid for by borrowing and raiding money that would otherwise go to schools and universities.

"These are political choices, not the choices voters in Wisconsin would make."

Walker's proposed budget will now go to the state Legislature, which is controlled by Walker's fellow Republicans.

Debate on the measure is expected to continue for months.

Kids teach parents to respect the environment

Feb. 13, 2013 ? A child can directly influence the attitude and behaviour of their parents towards the environment without them even knowing it.

This is according to a group at Imperial College London who have, for the first time, provided quantitative support for the suggestion that environmental education can be transferred between generations and that it can actually affect behaviour.

Their findings have been published February 13, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters.

The study took part on the Mah? Island in the Republic of Seychelles, where there is a very strong history of environmental education. The researchers based their study around the degradation of freshwater habitats in the country's wetlands, which is being caused by litter, wetland reclamation and household wastewater.

A total of 15 wildlife clubs, who each provide environmental education to children in the school system through a series of activities, took part in the study.

"School children in the Seychelles are fortunate to have a curriculum that emphasises the teaching of environmental concepts across a broad range of subjects," said lead author of the study Peter Damerell of Imperial's Department of Life Sciences.

"In addition, NGO-supported wildlife clubs are present within all education institutions and represent an opportunity to undertake more detailed and interactive activities than are possible within the classroom setting alone."

Of the 15 wildlife clubs involved in the study, seven participated in wetland activities over a 12-month period, whilst the remaining eight worked on alternative subjects; 161 students were involved overall.

Questionnaires were issued to all of the students, as well as their parents, and were based on multiple aspects of wetland knowledge, such as the different species that live in the wetlands and the threats that they're being exposed to.

The questionnaires issued to the parents also included questions on their use of water, which were specifically designed to test how conscious they were of water shortages -- there were 16 possible behaviours that a parent was scored on.

Results showed that a child's participation in the activities not only increased their parent's knowledge of the wetlands but also their behaviour -- parents were more inclined to conserve water if their child participated in the wetland activity.

It is possible that the parents had a varying amount of wetland knowledge before the study; however, they had no control over which group their child was placed in, meaning the overall differences shown between the experimental and control group can be assumed to be down to the wetlands teaching.

Indeed, the researchers tested a wide range of possible explanatory variables for the observed differences in wetland knowledge and it was those related to children receiving wetland education at Wildlife Club Seychelles that were consistently the best at explaining the observed results.

"Within this study, parents were often shown to be unaware that they were gaining environmental knowledge via their children. This finding alone highlights the need for more quantitative, experimental style investigations into the capacity of children to influence their parent's knowledge and household behaviours.

"By providing evidence that shows children can cause their parents to take up more environmental practices, we hope that many more studies will attempt to look at how much knowledge is transferred under different scenarios, and which pieces of information are most likely to change household practices," continued Damerell.

Group: Somali journalist detained without trial

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? A Somali journalist is being detained without charge in Somalia for speaking out against the imprisonment of a fellow reporter, said an international human rights group.

Daud Abdi Daud has been held without charge since Feb. 5 and his detention is sending a broader message to Somali journalists to stay silent, said Human Rights Watch in a statement released Tuesday.

According to the rights group, Daud's arrest stems from an incident last week when a Mogadishu court handed down one-year prison sentences to a woman who said she was raped by security forces and a reporter who interviewed her. Daud spoke out in court saying that journalists have the right to interview people.

After Daud reportedly added that he would even seek to interview the president's wife, the police arrested him, the group said.

Human Rights Watch has asked Somali authorities to immediately charge or release Daud.

"The authorities should charge or release him, but they should not be shutting down free expression by jailing journalists and throwing away the key," said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. Somali authorities declined to comment on Daud's arrest.

Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon on Tuesday said that due process must be observed in the administration of justice.

"We have an independent judiciary in Somalia and although the government cannot and must not be involved in the administration of justice, I am urging due process to be followed at all times," he said in a statement.

Shirdon said that the Independent Task Force on Human Rights, which was launched earlier this month, will be looking at human rights abuses committed over the past 12 months.

"I reiterate my government's commitment to a free press and freedom of speech. Journalists should feel that they are not alone. It is essential that they are able to work freely and effectively without facing additional difficulties," Shirdon said.

The alleged rape victim in the case Daud attended was charged with insulting a government body, inducing false evidence, simulating a criminal offense and making a false accusation. Freelance journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur was charged with insulting a government body and inducing the woman to give false evidence. Three others charged in the case, including the woman's husband, were acquitted Tuesday.

All the defendants denied the charges in court.

Rights groups said the handling of the rape case is politically motivated because the woman had accused security forces of the assault. Rape is reported to be rampant in Mogadishu, where tens of thousands of people who fled last year's famine live in poorly protected camps. Government troops are often blamed.

The charges and resulting sentences may result in even fewer victims of sexual assault coming forward to report attacks in conservative Somalia, rights groups fear.

Somalia is one of the world's most dangerous countries in which to practice journalism, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Last year 18 Somali journalists were killed yet no one was arrested. So far this year one reporter has been killed making it 45 since 2007.

During the International Day to End Impunity last year the National Union of Somali Journalists said that impunity has become a fundamental problem in Somalia.

Journalists in almost every region of the country commonly face harassment, blackmail, arbitrary police detention and, in addition, criminals are hired to suppress them, said the group.

    State Of The Union Tonight

WASHINGTON (AP) - Reviving his re-election message, President Barack Obama will press a politically-divided Congress to approve more tax increases and fewer spending cuts during a State of the Union address focused on stabilizing the middle class and repairing the still-wobbly economy.

The agenda Obama will outline tonight before a joint session of Congress will include more money for infrastructure, clean energy technologies and manufacturing jobs, as well as expanding access to early childhood education.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama would outline "his plan to create jobs and grow the middle class" as the nation struggles with persistently high unemployment.

Some of Obama's job ideas will be repackaged versions of proposals he made during his first term, though aides say there will be some new initiatives, too. All of the economic proposals are expected to echo themes from Obama's re-election campaign, which focused on using increased spending to generate jobs, protecting programs to help the middle class, and bringing down the deficit in part by culling more tax revenue from the wealthiest Americans.

Obama has called for raising more revenue through closing tax breaks and loopholes, but he has not detailed a list of targets. He and his aides often mention as examples of unnecessary tax breaks a benefit for owners of private jets and tax subsidies for oil and gas companies. Such measures are modest, however. Ending the corporate plane and oil and gas breaks would generate about $43 billion in revenue over 10 years.

Republicans have shown little sign of falling in line behind the president as he starts his second term, particularly when it comes to taxes.

    President Barack Obama's State

of the Union address will begin at 9 p.m. today and will be carried on most of the major networks.

"Clearly the president wants more revenue for more government," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said in an interview. "He's gotten all the revenue he's going to get. Been there, done that."

The backdrop for Obama's address will be a March 1 deadline for averting automatic across-the-board spending cuts, known as the sequester. The president wants lawmakers to push that deadline back for a second time to create space for a larger deficit-reduction deal, one he hopes would include a balance of targeted cuts and increased tax revenue. Republicans want to offset the sequester with spending cuts alone.

As he addresses lawmakers and the American people, Obama is expected to say that government entitlement programs should be on the table in deficit reduction talks. But he will also make the case that programs that help the middle class, the poor and the elderly must be protected.

In keeping with that approach, the White House said Monday that Obama would not consider increasing the Medicare eligibility age as a way to reduce spending.

A Quinnipiac University poll out Monday showed than 35 percent of registered voters are most interested in hearing the president during the State of the Union address the economy, more than any other issue. The federal deficit came in second, with 20 percent saying that was the issue they were most interested in hearing Obama discuss.

More than 50 percent of registered voters said they thought the economy was still in a recession and 79 percent described the economy as "not so good" or "poor."

Obama will also press Congress to support his proposals for changing the nation's immigration laws and tighten gun measures, though his remarks on both issues are expected to break little new ground and largely reflect his previous statements.

Still, the White House and some lawmakers will aim to use the atmospherics of the annual address to Congress to rally support for stricter gun laws.

Foreign policy will take a backseat to domestic issues, though Obama may discuss next steps for drawing down U.S. troops from Afghanistan and reducing the nation's nuclear stockpile.

The president will follow up his State of the Union address with three days of travel around the country. He'll start Wednesday in Asheville, N.C., where he'll visit Linamar Corp., a supplier of engine and transmission components that has expanded its manufacturing operations.

Obama is expected to reiterate his calls for revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing sector, perhaps reviving his campaign pledge to create 1 million new manufacturing jobs during his second term.

(AP) ? Security forces sprayed protesters with water hoses and tear gas outside the presidential palace as Egyptians marked the second anniversary of the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak's with angry demonstrations against his elected successor.

The forces were trying to disperse a small crowd of protesters on Monday evening, after some of them attempted to cross a barbed wire barrier meant to block them from the palace gate. Some protesters chanted: "The people want to bring down the regime." Others threw stones.

Graffiti scribbled on the palace walls read: "Erhal" or "Leave," the chant that echoed through Cairo's central Tahrir Square during the 18-day uprising that ended with Mubarak stepping down on Feb. 11, 2011.

Earlier, masked men briefly blocked trains at a central Cairo subway station and a dozen other protesters blocked traffic with burning tires on a main overpass in Cairo. Hundreds rallied outside the office of the country's chief prosecutor, demanding justice and retribution for protesters killed in clashes with security forces after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi took office last summer.

The protesters lobbed plastic bags filled with red liquid at the prosecutor's office to recall the blood spilled by civilians in clashes with security forces. The prosecutor's appointment by Morsi was criticized as a violation of the judiciary's independence. Another group of protesters locked shut the doors of the main administrative building for state services just outside the subway station at Tahrir Square.

Egypt has been gripped by political turmoil since Mubarak's ouster, in an uprising driven largely by anger over widespread abuse at the hands of state security agencies. After he stepped down, Mubarak was replaced by a ruling military council that was in power for 17 months. The rule of the generals was marred by violence and criticism that the council mismanaged the transitional period.

Morsi won the first free elections in June. But he and his Muslim Brotherhood, which rose to be Egypt's most powerful political group post-Mubarak, are now facing the wrath of Egyptians who drove the 2011 revolt but who say few of their goals have been realized.

For many in Egypt, the past two years have only increased frustration, with the economy deteriorating as political bickering between a largely secular opposition and a tightly organized and conservative Islamist bloc obstructed progress.

Protesters are particularly angry over the continued heavy handedness of security services, claiming little has changed since the Mubarak era. Many accuse Morsi and the Brotherhood of trying to monopolize power and ignoring the demands of the secular and liberal groups who were the backbone of the uprising.

On Monday, government opponents marched to Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising, which has been sealed off by protesters since November. Others went to the presidential palace. Hundreds also marched through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city.

"Of course I feel disappointed. Every day it's getting worse," said Ahmed Mohamed, a 20-year-old engineering student protesting outside the presidential palace. "The economy is even worse and all government institutions are collapsing. Morsi won't even acknowledge this."

Doaa Mustafa, a 33-year-old housewife, said she is willing to stay on the streets until Morsi steps down, as Mubarak did.

"We're here so that Mohammed Morsi, the dictator, will leave. He is just as bad as Mubarak, if not worse."

The protesters are also demanding the amendment of the country's new constitution. They claim that Islamists rushed the charter through the approval process despite disagreement with the opposition. The result, they say, was a charter that undermines freedoms of expression and belief and chips away at women rights.

Some protesters are also demanding a new Cabinet, accusing the current government of being ineffective and failing to rein in police abuses or institute economic reforms. One of the most heated issues for protesters remains a lack of accountability for those responsible for the deaths of hundreds of civilians during protests against the state.

Morsi and his supporters have repeatedly dismissed the opposition's charges, accusing the opposition and Mubarak supporters alike of trying to topple a democratically elected president.

After seven months in office, Morsi's popularity has fallen some 10 percent to 53 percent, according to pollster Magued Osman of the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research. The poll was conducted via telephone interviews with more than 2,300 participants and had a margin of error of less than 3 percent. Only 39 percent of those polled said they would elect Morsi again if there were new elections, compared to 50 percent a month earlier.

Prominent opposition figure Amr Moussa urged Morsi to reconsider his views of the opposition, telling a late night TV program on Sunday that it is "the wrong assessment" to view the rising street anger against Morsi as a "conspiracy" to topple him.

An increasingly violent wave of protests has spread outside of the capital in recent weeks as political initiatives failed to assuage the anger.

The recent explosion of violence began on the second anniversary of the start of the uprising on Jan.25.

It accelerated with riots in the Suez Canal city of Port Said by youths furious over death sentences issued against local soccer fans over a bloody stadium riot a year ago. Around 70 were killed in this wave of clashes, while violent mob attacks against women protesters increasingly marred gatherings at Tahrir Square.

On Monday, members of the human rights commission of the Islamist-dominated legislative assembly said women should have specific areas for protesting, criticizing them for rallying among men and in areas considered unsafe. They called for the passing of a new law to regulate protesting, and enable the police to protect women, according to the state news agency MENA.

Crowds at Monday's protests were relatively small and the violence muted.

Also on Monday, the U.S. urged protesters and security forces to show restraint and renewed a call for dialogue.

"We continue to support a broad dialogue between Egypt's leaders and the various political stakeholders to work through the various issues of concern, because there needs to be a strong national consensus in Egypt about the way forward," said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. "We want to see peace on the street."

Northeast digs out from blizzard; new storm brews in Plains

CAMBRIDGE, Mass./NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Northeast started digging out on Sunday after a blizzard dumped up to 40 inches (1 meter) of snow with hurricane force winds, killing at least nine people and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

New York City trucks plowed through residential streets, piling snow even higher at the edges and leaving thousands of motorists to dig their buried vehicles out from mountains of snow.

"I give up," Giovanni Marchenna, 52, of Manhattan said with a laugh.

"Looks like I'll be taking the subway to work until the snow melts," he added, noting he spent more than an hour shovelling snow.

On Monday, additional severe weather may bring more misery, with freezing rain and more snow predicted that would make the trip home for evening commuters even more difficult.

"It will make it a little more hazardous and a little more slick on the roads," said Kenneth James, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Maryland.

In Boston, Mayor Tom Menino cancelled school on Monday after touring neighbourhoods throughout the city, where 2 feet of snow fell.

"Our No. 1 priority today is getting to the side streets," he said, saying it was the fifth-deepest snowfall ever in the city.

Utility companies reported that some 350,000 customers were still without electricity across nine states after the wet, heavy snow brought down tree branches and power lines. About 700,000 homes and businesses were without power at one point on Saturday.

Air traffic began to return to normal on Sunday after some 5,800 flights were cancelled on Friday and Saturday, according to Flightaware, a flight-tracking service.

Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, and New York state's Long Island MacArthur Airport reopened on Sunday morning. Both had been closed on Saturday.

Boston's Logan International Airport reopened late on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Rare travel bans in Connecticut and Massachusetts were lifted but roads throughout the region remained treacherous, according to state transportation departments.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, residents were digging out their cars and driveways under clear blue skies on Sunday afternoon.

Charles Damico, a retired electrical engineer who was clearing his driveway with a snowblower, said the snow was "nothing" compared to the amount he remembers falling during the blizzard of 1978 that dumped between 2 and 4 feet (60 and 122 cm) of snow on the region.

"I didn't have a snowblower at that time, so everything was done by hand," he said. "This is nothing compared to it."

As the region recovered, another large winter storm building across the Northern Plains was expected to leave a foot (30 cm)of snow and bring high winds from Colorado to central Minnesota into Monday, the National Weather Service said.

    FRESH STORM BREWING

South Dakota was expected to be hardest hit, with winds reaching 50 miles per hour (80 kph), creating white-out conditions. The storm was expected to reach parts of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Wisconsin.

South Dakota officials closed a 150-mile (240-km) stretch of Interstate 90 in the centre of the state. They also closed 75 miles (120 km) of Interstate 29 in the state's north-eastern corner near North Dakota.

Officials said motels and other facilities along Interstate 90 were filling up with travellers trying to avoid the heavy drifting and near-zero visibility.

"Travel will be difficult to impossible at times on other highways in many areas of South Dakota," state transportation officials said in a statement.

Friday and Saturday's mammoth storm stretched from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic and covered several spots in the Northeast with more than 3 feet (91 cm) of snow. Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts took the brunt of the blizzard.

The Connecticut town of Hamden had 40 inches (101 cm) and nearby Milford 38 inches (96.5 cm), the National Weather Service said.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday that 675 pieces of equipment and 975 personnel had been dispatched to help Suffolk County, making up the eastern half of Long Island, dig out of 3 feet of snow.

"Suffolk County has not seen a winter storm like Nemo in years, and the massive amount of snow left behind effectively shut down the entire region," Cuomo said in a statement, referring to the Weather Channel's name for the storm.

    SOME TRANSIT STILL SUSPENDED

Amtrak said it planned to run a limited service between New York and Boston on Sunday and a regular Sunday schedule from New York to the state capital in Albany.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said it planned to resume limited service on Sunday afternoon.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and Connecticut Transit said service would remain suspended on Sunday.

Stratford, Connecticut, Mayor John Harkins told WTNH television on Saturday that snow had fallen at a rate of 6 inches (15 cm) an hour and even plows were getting stuck.

The storm dropped 31.9 inches (81 cm) of snow on Portland, Maine, breaking a 1979 record, the weather service said. Winds gusted to 83 miles per hour (134 kph) at Cuttyhunk, New York, and brought down trees across the region.

The storm contributed to at least five deaths in Connecticut and two each in New York state and Boston, authorities said. A motorist in New Hampshire also died when he went off a road but authorities said his health may have been a factor in the crash.

The two deaths in Boston were separate incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning in cars, an 11-year-old boy and a man in his early 20s. The boy had climbed into the family car to keep warm while his father cleared snow. The engine was running but the exhaust was blocked, said authorities.

There were also road rescues along the Long Island Expressway from Friday night to Saturday morning, some using snowmobiles. A baby girl was delivered early on Saturday by emergency services personnel in Worcester, Massachusetts.
